 The next time you eat an apple for extra fiber, remember that you're going to be swallowing about 100 million bacteria.  And whether these bacteria are harmful or beneficial will depend on how the apple is grown.


 Researchers say that most bacteria are present in apples, but it depends on what kind of apple you eat or whether the apple is organic.  They say that organically grown apples have more variety and balanced bacteria than conventionally grown apples that make them healthier and tastier.

 Professor Gabriel Berg from the Graz University of Technology, Austria, said, "Bacteria, fungi and viruses enter our intestines through food.  Most of these are killed during cooking, so fruits and raw vegetables are particularly important sources of gut bacteria."


 The study, published in the journal Frontiers on Microbiology, compared the Bacterium Rhea between conventionally stored and purchased apples and fresh organic apples. Below the slightly dissected stem, peel, anus, seed and calyx—where the flower occurs  , were analyzed separately.  Overall, it was found that both conventional and organic apples had the same number of bacteria.

 "Putting together the components of each apple on average, we estimated that 240 grams of apples contained about 100 million bacteria," Berg said.  Therefore, if you remove the seed cell, the number of bacteria in your food will decrease by up to 10 million.


 Now the question is, are these bacteria good or beneficial for you?

 "Fresh and organically managed apples have significantly greater diversity, even and distinct bacterial communities than conventionally managed apples," explains Berg, a specific group of bacteria that affect health.  Known to potentially have an effect, were also evaluated in favor of organic apples.

 Researchers say a group of bacteria known to cause disease, 'Escherichia-shingella', was found in samples from conventional apples but not present in organic apples.
